Charles Fountain Faulkner was born on 3 July 1881, in Nortonville, Hopkins, Kentucky to Hutchins Burton Faulkner and Margaret Francis "Fanny" (Mills) Faulkner.¹

Charles' childhood was spent on the family farm in Hopkins County, Kentucky with his parents and siblings, Mary Elizabeth, Thomas B, and John A, who died as a child.²

Following his father's death in 1888,³ Charles' mother, Fanny, remarried to Philip Taylor and the family, moved to Tennessee, then on to Louisville, Kentucky.⁴

The family soon grew with children from Fanny and Philip's marriage, as Phenaty May, Margaret Ellen, and William Miller Taylor, joined their half-siblings, Charles, Thomas, and Mary Elizabeth.

At the age of 21, Charles was working as a mechanic and living on his own in Louisville.⁵ He soon met Lora E Swafford and they married on 7 March 1908 in Shelby County, Tennessee.⁶

Their first child, William Melvin, was born in Tennessee.⁷ They soon moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where their daughter, Frances, was born in 1909.⁸

The family next moved to Cairo, Alexander County, Illinois and were living with Charles' step-father, Philip Taylor, when Charles and Lora's son, Philip was born.⁹

Between 1916 and 1918, the family moved to Chicago, Cook, Illinois where the remainder of the children, Carl,¹⁰ Clarence Charles,¹¹ Dorthy,¹² Ernest,¹³ and Abe ¹⁴ were born. Sadly, Carl ¹⁵ and Dorthy ¹⁶ only lived a few days.

Charles and Laura remained living in the Chicago area throughout their lives. In 1918, when Charles registered for the WWI draft, the family was living at 810 E. 57th St, where the University of Chicago Medical Center is now located. Charles operated a business printing and distributing circulars in the Chicago area. The boys helped their father with the distribution. ¹⁷

By 1920, Charles, Laura and their family had moved to 70th Street S on the south side of Chicago.¹⁸ In 1930, the growing family had moved to Evans St. and had a radio for entertainment. William, Phil, Clarence, Ernie and Abe were living with Charles and Lora, as was a new granddaughter, Betty Lou. William was listed as having married in 1929-1930 and Betty Lou was born in December 1929 and presumed to be William's daughter.¹⁹

In 1942, Charles and Lora were living in an apartment located at 7217 Stewart St. in Chicago. The building was built in 1915 and was still operating as an apartment in 2017. At the time, Charles was working at Kane Watch Services at 211 Wacker in downtown Chicago. ²⁰

3. April 1888: Charles was named in a Guardian's Bond filed by his mother, Margaret Frances Faulkner in April 1888. Hutch and Fanny's son, John, was not listed with the other children in the bond.

4. 1900: At 19, Charles was living with his brother, Thomas, his mother, stepfather and three half-siblings, Phenaty, Maggie and William.

As with the 1888 Guadian's bond, his brother, John was not listed on the 1900 census. It is believed he died sometime before 20 April 1888 (Guardian's bond date). On the census, Fanny states she had given birth to 8 children, of whom 6 were living. It is unknown whether the other child that had died was during her Faulkner marriage or while she was married to Philip Taylor.

Additionally, the first two children born in the Taylor marriage were born in Tennessee, implying the Taylor family moved from Hopkins County, Kentucky sometime between October 1888, when Fanny and Philip were married, to Nashville, Tennessee where Phenaty was born in 1900.

They moved again to Louisville, Kentucky between 1891, when Maggie was born, and 1897, when William was born.
