Lora E Swafford was born on 20 July 1888, in Bainbridge, Williamson County, Illinois, to William R Swafford and Nancy (Brack) Swafford.¹

As a young girl, her family moved to Poplar Bluff, Missouri where she grew up with her siblings, Edward, Ada, Dora, Joshua, Thomas, and Jessie.²

Lora married Charles Fountain Faulkner on 7 March 1908 in Shelby County, Tennessee.³ Their first child, William Melvin, was born in Tennessee.⁴ They soon moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where their daughter, Frances, was born in St. Louis in 1909.⁵ The family next moved to Cairo, Alexander County, Illinois and were living with Charles' step-father, Philip Taylor, ⁶ when Charles and Lora's son, Philip was born. ⁷ The remainder of the children, Carl,⁸ Clarence Charles,⁹ Dorthy,¹⁰ Ernest,¹¹ and Abe,¹² were born after the family settled in the Chicago, Cook County, Illinois area. Sadly, Carl¹³ and Dorthy¹⁴ only lived a few days.

Charles and Laura remained living in Chicago throughout their lives. In 1918, when Charles registered for the WWI draft, the family was living at 810 E 57th St, where the University of Chicago Medical Center is now located.¹⁵

By 1920, Charles, Laura and their family had moved to 70th Street S on the south side of Chicago.¹⁶ In 1930, the growing family had moved to Evans St. and had a radio for entertainment. William, Phil, Clarence, Ernie, and Abe were living with Charles and Lora, as was a new granddaughter, Betty Lou. William was listed as having married in 1929-1930 and Betty Lou was born in December 1929 and presumed to be William's daughter.¹⁷

In 1942, Charles and Lora were living in an apartment located at 7217 Stewart St. The building was built in 1915 and was still operating as an apartment in 2017.¹⁸

Lois (Birdsell) Harned was Bonnie Harned's mother and mother-in-law to William Melvin Faulkner. She signed William's delayed birth certificate application as his aunt, in the name of Lois Swafford Harned.

William's mother was Lora Swafford - there is no evidence Lois was her sister. It is believed she could not attest in person as his mother-in-law (as she would not have been present at the birth) and signed as his "aunt."

Other inaccuracies: Father, Charles, was born in Hopkins County, Kentucky, not Paducah per his own delayed birth certificate.
